Mid-fire ceramic, hand built, layered slip, glaze, oxides and gold luster glaze. Oceans are the lifeblood of the Earth-body and it is the woman’s body that carries and births human life, yet both are exposed to collective abuse. The woman’s torso and the seashell effortlessly become one in this organic curved ceramic form. Growth and loss are alive within the sculpture’s richly layered outer texture while opalescent, golden dots of brilliant light contrast the She-shell’s fractured surface. The world's oceans are heavily impacted by human activities, researchers have concluded that no area is unaffected by human influence. Huge fishing fleets, global shipping and pollution running off the land are combining with climate change to degrade the oceans, the researchers found. Just 5% of the remaining ocean wilderness is within existing marine protection areas. Collectively, we can demand more protection of reefs and other vital spawning areas.
