Hand-coiled mid-fire ceramic, oxide, glazes, underglazes and gold luster. Using clay coils I hand built this form based on a section of the female torso. Masks are necessary in this time, they keep humans safe, but are a danger to sea life when they are carelessly left in the ocean environment. Two experiences moved me to talk about the environmental impact in my artwork: witnessing trash left at the shore and viewing the documentary My Octopus Teacher. I could easily visualize the intelligent octopus reaching out to multitudes of masks as if they were schools of fish. The images are hand drawn and painted layers of underglaze, gold glaze and opalescent glaze and fired multiple times in an efficient electric kiln.
