Sea Tangles

Sea Tangles , 3D
Sea Tangles
Fiber art (ceiling installation), cotton fabric, seaweed cord, photograph transfers on fabric, cotton threads, beads, and copper. Seaweed cord is hand-knitted and the embroidery hand-stitched over seaweed photos. This fiber artwork is a collaboration by two artists who are both influenced by living near the Pacific Ocean. Tangle: complication, coil, mesh, mix-up, skein…descriptions that can be attributed to our art process. We see beautiful tangles of seaweed on our walks. Algae is vital to the health of the ocean. We also witness (and remove) entanglements of balloon ribbon and other plastic coiled into the seaweed strands. Choosing to not release helium balloons into the environment is one small act to protect sea life and prevent treacherous tangling.
